Outreach and Engagement Plans
For local historic preservation commissions, public outreach and engagement programs are vital to safeguarding the significant historic resources of the community and building an appreciation for special places.
The list of outreach and engagement ideas is vast and overwhelming. Sometimes, before getting started it is best to start with a plan. An outreach and engagement plan begins with giving a voice to all community stakeholders, listening to challenges, opportunities and solutions. From there, recommendations are formed, resulting in partnerships, programs, and policies that will have meaningful ownership in the community.
By reaching out and engaging with diverse audiences, preservation can be about saving those meaningful places outside of typical preservation efforts, addressing issues of equity and inclusion, and improving quality of life, the sense of connection, for everyone.
Promoting the heritage of a community, through outreach and engagement, is an essential part of a local historic preservation program, one that grows more effective over time, as more and more people feel a connection to the buildings, places and landscapes of their community.
